ASG Vice president
for Finance and Administration Amanda Cristelli said she requested
the passwords for the e-mail accounts be changed, but she had intended
for the links to the Web sites to be taken down, not for the Web sites
to be deleted.
She faulted a miscommunication between herself and the IT Help Desk.
Cristelli said the Web sites would be re-instated immediately.
However, the situation caused numerous complaints from student clubs,
especially as many claimed that they had never been informed by any
one in ASG about the changes that would be taking place.
In e-mails exchanged between Cristelli, Dean of Student Life Zav Dadabhoy,
ASG members and Greg Hoeck, IT professional, the miscommunication
was evident. In an e-mail to Hoeck, Cristelli requested that all club
Web sites be removed and passwords for the e-mail accounts changed.
We are attempting to streamline our processes and all paper
work must go through ASG before any club account/Web sites are re-instated
or created, Cristelli said.
Cristelli said ASGs Web site is ineffective because it cannot
be efficiently maintained, especially without the clubs updating their
pages. Many clubs do not use their club e-mail accounts or Web pages.
Sophomore Brandi Swing, a sociology/criminology major and president
of Winter Guard, said her club used to use the club e-mail account
to keep the campus, especially other clubs, updated on events.
Now that we cant mass e-mail other students and clubs
there is no reason for us to use our e-mail account, Swing said.
Cristelli said that because of the changes ASG is planning to make
with their Web site, all clubs needed to prove that they actually
used their accounts by filling in the appropriate forms. ASGs
desire to shut off e-mail access was intended to get the club officers
attention because the necessary paperwork had to be turned in. However,
in an e-mail to Hoeck, responding to the numerous complaints he received
from clubs, Dadabhoy said that he had not given Cristelli the authorization
to completely turn off all club Web sites and e-mails.
Cristelli had proposed deactivating e-mail accounts and Web site access
due to clubs not complying with ASG policy. Dadabhoy said that in
his opinion, deactivating access was too harsh, but he was willing
to authorize that the links to the club Web sites that are currently
on the ASG Web site be removed. Cristelli said that she has been trying
to get club officers to provide receipts and update their Web pages
for months. Several times she provided the forms to officers but the
forms were never filled out. However, many clubs and club sponsors
claim that they were never informed of the situation or told they
had to fill out paperwork. The Environmental Club was one of the clubs
affected by the situation. Jessica Viges, a senior Biology major,
said she did not know that the passwords for the e-mail accounts had
been changed. I called IT and they re-set the password for me.
I didnt know that ASG had changed the passwords because we were
not told anything by our president or anyone else. Viges said
their Web page was not affected because its in the works.
In fact, an e-mail from Cristelli to club sponsors regarding the situation
was not sent out until two hours after the club accounts had been
turned off, leaving many in a state of confusion, not knowing who
was responsible and how to fix it.
Steven Titus, the senator for clubs and organizational funding, said
that he received many calls and e-mails about the situation, and had
no information to give the individuals who were contacting him, as
he had not even been informed of the plan to completely shut off club
Web sites and e-mails that day. Representatives of clubs found themselves
confused, as they were used to dealing with Titus, and were then re-directed.
Titus said that he himself is confused about why he was not informed
about the plans to change club e-mails and Web sites. As the
club senator, I am responsible for dealing with the clubs, and also
for mediating between ASG and clubs. When I am left out of the decision
making process, the clubs are left in the dark. |
